Wild Amazon Expedition to the Upper Tambopata River Sandoval Lake 5/4

Boat trip to Wasai Tambopata Lodge

Day 1 Transfer to Wasai Tambopata Lodge | Night Walk

A staff member will be waiting for you at the airport to transfer you to Wasai Puerto Maldonado Ecolodge, where you will be welcomed with a delicious tropical juice. After a brief explanation of the tour and accommodating the luggage we will start a trip of approximately two hours to Wasai Tambopata lodge. The trip is initially carried out by land vehicle for 47km of paved road followed by 17 km of an off-road route that passes through settler’s farms and primary forests. This road ends in a small port in the Tambopata river where our motorboat will be waiting for us to cruise the Tambopata River downstream for approximately 20 minutes, headed towards WASAI Tambopata Lodge (Box lunch on the route). During the journey we will have the opportunity to observe various bird species, hopefully families of capybaras, the world largest rodents, alligators and other wildlife.

Reception and accommodation at the Lodge. Introductory nocturnal walk to understand rainforest ecosystems and see and hear some of the amazing insects, bats, frogs, and perhaps some occasional encounter with other nocturnal mammals. Return to the lodge for dinner. We will enjoy diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in the Amazon. Night at WASAI Tambopata Lodge.

Upper Tambopata River

Day 2 Campsite | Kayaking | Private Concession

You will wake in a calm natural environment with the tune of exotic birds. Those who wake up early can contemplate the beautiful sunrise and take pictures in the surroundings of the lodge or from our viewpoint. After breakfast we will cross the Tambopata river by boat and start a trekk though one of the the trails of WASAI's private conservation concession. After lunch you will make the 1 hour journey further up the River Tambopata to the limit of the reserve and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. This journey provides an excellent opportunity to see birds and animals of the amazon, such as capybara, jaguar, river turtles and caimans. You will arrive at the checkpoint site of the rangers of the Bahuaja Sonene National Park in the late afternoon and establish camp close on the confluence of the Malinowski and Alto Tambopata river. You will be able to watch the amazon sunset and swim in the river or have a go at catching some of the abundant fish. At night we can search for animals by the river beach or head to the mammal claylick in hope to find some hervibores- and the animals that hunt them such as jaguar or ocelots. Night at the camp site. We will enjoy the diverse sounds of the amazon which will accompany our second night in Amazonia (B, L, D)

Macaw's clay lick

Day 3 Macaw's clay lick | Adventure Activities | Cayman Search

You will wake at dawn to the sound of Howler Monkeys and hundreds of parakeets wheeling through the red morning sky. After a short journey by boat upstream the Alto Tambopata River, of aprox. 25 minutes you will arrive to the site of the Chuncho Clay Lick. You will watch several species of macaws and many species of parrots and parakeets gather to eat clay in the first few hours after sunrise. Breakfast will be served by the beach as we wait for the macaws to come down. After the bird show you will travel back down the river to the CAMP SITE to pick up our belongings and tents.

After that, we will return to WASAI Tambopata Lodge through the Tambopata River, where we will take a rest. Those who wish can swim in the Lodge’s dock or you may perform adventure activities: zip-line, triline, floating ropes. After lunch, we will do an Ethnobotanical walk where we will learn about the medical plants of the region and see walking palm trees, giant lupunas, and many other curious flora species. At night, we will go on a boat ride in search for caymans in the banks of the Tambopata river, where we will be able to get a closer look of them. Night at WASAI Tambopata Lodge (B,

Sandoval Lake

Day 4 Sandoval Lake

You will have breakfast and then make the journey back down the Tambopata River to Puerto Maldonado. You will arrive at WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge for lunch. In the afternoon you cruise the Madre de Dios River downstream for 30 minutes and then walk for 3km through the forest to the tranquil and beautiful Sandoval Lake, located in a diferent side of the Tambopata National Reserve. At the lake your guide will paddle for you in a wooden canoe to look for Giant River Otters and birds such as Hoatzin and Aningha. You will walk back through the forest to look for some of the nocturnal creatures of the forest and then travel back to the lodge for a final evening meal. Night at WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge. Sunrise

Day 5 Cacao Experience | Transfer out

After breakfast we will go to Cacao Center which is located across the street from the Hotel. Here there will be a workshop where you will be shown the different types of cacao beans produced in Tambopata and other Peruvian regions and the different ways it is processed. You will get the chance to taste different products made from cacao. You will also learn how to elaborate chocolate and every participant will get a craft made chocolate bar as a gift. Note: The workshop usually takes around 2 hours, but depending on your flight schedule it might be shortened. Transfer to the airport. (B)
