Rainforest Adventure Road Trip to the Upper Tambopata 2/1

This short program is ideal for people who want an in-depth amazon experience but don’t have much time in their hands. It combines some offroad adventure, trekkings in the heart of the rainforest and a visit to the great Chuncho Claylick inside the Tambopata National Reserve.

Day 1 Transfer to Wasai Tambopata Lodge | Night Walk

A staff member will wait for you at the airport to transfer you to Wasai Puerto Maldonado Ecolodge, where you will be welcomed with a delicious tropical juice. After a brief explanation of the tour and accommodating the luggage, we will start a trip of approximately two hours to Wasai Tambopata lodge. The trip is initially carried out by land vehicle for 47km of paved road followed by 17 km of an off-road route that passes through settler’s farms and primary forests. This road ends in a small port in the Tambopata river where our motorboat will be waiting for us to cruise the Tambopata River downstream for approximately 20 minutes, headed towards WASAI Tambopata Lodge (Box lunch on the route). During the journey we will have the opportunity to observe various bird species, hopefully families of capybaras, the world largest rodents, alligators and other wildlife.

Reception and accommodation at the Lodge. Introductory nocturnal walk to understand rainforest ecosystems and see and hear some of the amazing insects, bats, frogs, and perhaps some occasional encounter with other nocturnal mammals. Return to the lodge for dinner. We will enjoy diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in the Amazon. Night at WASAI Tambopata Lodge.

Day 2 Macaw’s Clay lick | Etnobotanical Walk | Transfer out

Early wake up around 4:30 am, to begin our 60-90 minutes journey upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick “El Chuncho” in the limit of the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and Tambopata National Reserve. We will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks. At our arrival, if weather permits, we will observe one of the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots and different species of macaws gather to eat clay, an unforgettable experience that makes this one of the greatest tours in the amazon. Breakfast will be served while we wait for the birds to descend. Then we will walk by the river beach searching for animal footprints.

Halfway through the morning we will return to our Wasai Tambopata Lodge, located at the entrance of the National Park, after 1 hour from the Macaw Clay Lick. A fantastic voyage through the best of the Tambopata Reserve, with opportunities to see capybaras, tapirs, monkeys and with luck: jaguars. It is a route with high chances of seeing wildlife, one of the best in the Amazon. At your arrival, you can relax in the hammocks or have the chance of swimming in the Tambopata River. Those who wish can go kayaking on the river (*) or go fishing some of the 250 species that inhabit the river.

Return to the lodge for lunch. Lunch will be served between 1:30 to 2pm

After lunch, we will start an ethno botanical walk of 4 km through the heart of the Tambopata rainforest. There you'll able to see a different kind of forest as the trees have adapted to live in a flooded area, you can learn about plants and medicinal trees of the area; and take a look at the complex ecosystem where with walking palm trees, giant sacred lupuna trees, parasitic vines and so on. The trail ends at Venado Station where a vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Puerto Maldonado.
